Much of the funding for municipal projects requested by Rep. Christine Hunschofsky was vetoed by Gov. Ron DeSantis as he signed the budget for fiscal year 2025–2026, totaling $117.4 billion after $567 million in line-item vetoes.
Vetoed items in Coconut Creek included $200,000 for the fleet building rehabilitation project and $800,000 for work on advanced metering infrastructure. A request for $1,097,232 to expand the Junior Achievement Youth Workforce Program was also vetoed.
Two Margate projects, the Stormwater Infrastructure Assessment and Rehabilitation, valued at $500,000, and the Wastewater Digester 2 Rehabilitation Project, valued at $700,000, were vetoed.
A request for $121,000 for Parkland Emergency Management enhancements was vetoed.
At the county level, a request for $ 1.5 million for the Broward County Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance Program was vetoed.
Some of Hunschofsky’s requests were approved. Coral Springs will receive $500,000 for public safety improvements for the real-time crime center. The Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center will receive $350,000, and Every Mother’s Advocate, a child abuse prevention pilot, will receive $300,000.
Hunschofsky was disappointed that her requests, which she considered investments, were vetoed, especially when the legislature passed a leaner budget than last year and preserved reserves to guard against unforeseen economic challenges.
“Every project I sponsored was carefully vetted, had broad local support, and delivered clear benefits, especially job-training for young people, senior services, and workforce‐skills initiatives that keep our local economy strong,” she said.
The cities will have to make do and allocate funds from their budgets. Margate will continue work on necessary projects, although it may take a little longer. “It would have been nice to get this money to offset the costs, but the projects will be funded,” said Lisa Huriash, spokesperson for Margate.
