An ordinance to prohibit the use of electric bicycles, motorized mobility devices, and motorized scooters in city-owned parks except on park roads and parking lots was tabled during the September 11 meeting.
Commissioners were concerned that the new regulations would unfairly target responsible adults who want to use motorized scooters in the parks. There was a consensus that the ordinance was too harsh and would lead to many people being arrested for harmless activity.
Police Chief Fred Hofer told the commission that under the proposed ordinances, officers would have to arrest violators after one warning. This would apply to adults and juveniles.
Commissioner Joshua Rydell said he considered the ordinance to be legislation for the sake of legislation and was strongly opposed to it.
Mayor Jackie Railey considered the ordinance to be extreme and said the jails would become full of children who were arrested for violations.
The ordinance was brought before the commission due to concerns that the unregulated use of electric bicycles and motorized scooters in city parks was creating a public safety hazard, according to city information.
