Students from Coconut Creek High School’s Cougar Health Information Project (HIP) executive board represented their school with pride at the recent HIP Leadership Conference, gaining new skills and recognition for their commitment to student health and leadership.
The mission of HIP is to ensure that every kid in the US is healthy—physically and emotionally.
The scholars, guided by language arts instructor Fabio Cabrera, spent the day learning strategies to better engage ninth-grade students, strengthen their leadership abilities, and collaborate effectively as a team. Workshops also provided best practices for addressing issues related to both mental and physical health among peers.
A highlight of the event came when Broward County School Board Member Nora Rupert joined the Cougar group. She praised the students for their professionalism and enthusiasm, offering advice, networking opportunities, and continued support.
Rupert encouraged the students to stay in touch, even offering to write college recommendation letters. She also connected with Mr. Cabrera, sharing her personal contact information to discuss future collaboration on supporting District 7 schools.
Principal Nicole Nearor wrote in an email: “A huge Cougar ROAR to Mr. Cabrera and our Cougar HIP scholars! This is truly The Cougar Standard of Excellence.”
