Coconut Creek police officers will see changes to their pay, health insurance coverage, and paid leave.
During the October 9 meeting, the commission passed a resolution to ratify the collective bargaining agreement between the city and the Broward County Police Benevolent Association, the police officers’ unit.
There will be a shift from pay-for-performance to a ten-year step plan. Officers will see pay increases that correlate with their current years of service, resulting in varying actual pay increases per person.
Beginning in fiscal year 2026, the bargaining unit will follow the same health insurance plan and benefits as non-bargaining employees. There will be an increase to the city’s contribution for premiums, no increase to employees’ and family premiums for those on the high-deductible health plan, and implementation of the city’s health savings account contribution.
Regarding paid leave, the first six holidays of the year will each be banked as 10 hours of leave in January to be used that year. Time not used by the end of the year will be paid out as holiday pay up to 8.5 hours per holiday, only in the following January. The last five and two-half holidays of the year will be paid at 8.5 hours each. These were the major items of the contract that were approved.
Members of the commission were pleased to approve the contract. Commissioner Joshua Rydell said it is important for the city to take good care of its police officers and first responders.
