The Monarch High School Theatre Program is rehearsing The SpongeBob Musical for April 23-25, promising an entertaining experience for audiences.
The play centers on SpongeBob and his friends as they unite to save the underwater community of Bikini Bottom from an impending volcanic eruption. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy Cheeks—a squirrel who lives underwater—must learn to work together to stop the volcano. The musical features about 50 student participants.
Savannah Tessler, who plays Sandy and is an assistant music director, said she loves being a leader in the theatre program. “We have all worked hard together in rehearsal, and this is a complex show,” she said.
SpongeBob, portrayed by Julia DeBrito, is focused on preventing the eruption. “We have to work together to find a solution, and we use a bubble device to achieve that,” she said, adding she loves working on this show.
The opportunity to sing is important to Lina Kazaneh, who plays Patrick—SpongeBob’s best friend and a starfish—and also serves as assistant director. She explains, “I love to sing, and I plan to study music performance at FAU next year.”

Juliana Zamorano plays Plankton, the villain scheming to erupt the volcano. She said, “This musical took hard work, but I enjoy being part of it.”
At the recent Florida State Thespian Festival in Tampa, Zamorano earned a perfect score and top honors for her solo in RBJ and Me from The Anxiety Project. The theatre program had presented this at the District 7 Thespian in November. The program also won the Silver Honor Troupe Award for an outstanding year.
The director, Tataiana Ahlbum, is proud of her students’ work. Members of the theatre program handle all aspects of the show, designing lighting, sound, makeup, and props. As Ahlbum explained, “They collaborate and create the show from scratch.”

The performances will be held on April 23 and 24 at 6:30 p.m., and on April 25 at 1 p.m., at the Monarch High School auditorium, 5050 Wiles Road, Coconut Creek. All ticket sales will support future shows.
