Parents taking their children to Lyons Creek Middle School will soon notice improvements to the traffic situation there.
Following years of complaints from residents and the school community, the Coconut Creek Commission took action during the April 10 meeting. It approved a resolution for a traffic improvement agreement between the Broward County School Board and the city.
“This is long overdue, and I support this,” said Commissioner John Brodie.
The city and school leaders agreed that the loop in front of Lyons Creek along Sol Press Boulevard has caused significant traffic congestion during school drop-off and pick-up times. For more than a decade, the city has taken the necessary steps to address the traffic and safety concerns, including providing significant law enforcement resources.
The city and the school board agreed that switching the current locations of the bus loop and the parent loop will reduce the congestion along Sol Press Boulevard during school drop-off and pick-up times. They also agreed to work together to make improvements at Lyons Creek to reduce traffic congestion, according to city information.
According to the contract, the estimated cost for the improvement will be $1,465,000. The school board will contribute funding to switch the bus loop and parent loop locations, including paving, fencing, and an exterior canopy.
The planned improvement will require additional security personnel to monitor gates and access points during the school day, and the annual cost for this security will be $115,000. According to the contract, the city will fund modifications on city-owned property, the right of way, in two locations on the southeast and southwest sides of Sol Press Boulevard for $75,000.
