Mayor Sandra Welch, Vice Mayor Jackie Railey, and Commissioner Joshua Rydell may face challengers in the March 2025 election.
The three incumbent city commissioners up for reelection in Coconut Creek retained their seats in Tuesday’s election, voting results show.
Commissioner Jackie Railey, currently the city’s vice mayor, along with Commissioner Sandra Welch, the city’s current mayor, and Commissioner Joshua Rydell, all won their races by wide margins, according to voting totals posted on the Broward County Supervisor of Elections (SOE) site.
Railey defeated Philippa Sklaar in Coconut Creek’s District B, winning 2,656 votes to Sklaar’s 734, the SOE tally shows.
Sklaar had spent months attacking Railey, her neighbor in Wynmoor Village, lobbing accusations of financial wrongdoing and alleging other misconduct. Railey sued Sklaar for defamation – a case that is ongoing – and was cleared of wrongdoing by a retired Broward County Judge hired by the city to investigate.
In District C, Welch defeated challenger Patricia Duaybes with 2,351 votes versus Duaybes’ 991, according to the SOE tally.
Duaybes lost despite raising more money than any candidate in the last fundraising cycle – about $64,000 – and winning endorsements from Tamarac Vice Mayor Kicia Daniel, former Coconut Creek Mayor Mikkie Belvedere, and other local politicians.
In District E, Rydell defeated challenger Felicia Shuman Newkirk with 2,849 votes to Newkirk’s 487, the SOE numbers show.
