A small but passionate group of students at Coconut Creek High School is turning a love of reading into a growing campus community.
The Coconut Creek High School Book Club, sponsored by media specialist Ruth Martinez-Pineiro, brings together 10 students in grades 9 through 12 who share a common interest in literature.
The group meets regularly in the school’s Learning Commons, where members discuss books they are reading, explore new titles, and connect with fellow students who enjoy reading.
Though modest in size, the club has made a notable impact. Most recently, members competed in the Battle of the Books competition at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where they placed seventh out of 12 schools. Students prepared by reading all 15 titles on the 2025–2026 Florida Teens Read list.
Beyond competitions, the club also emphasizes enrichment experiences. Members have participated in several field trips, including visits to the Miami Book Fair, a performance by the Seraphic Fire Choral Ensemble at Parker Playhouse, and Biology Day at Busch Gardens.
