Coconut Creek Mayor Jeffrey R. Wasserman says the city is preparing for financial challenges after Florida voters approved Amendment 3, which will change property taxes beginning in the 2027-28 fiscal year.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Wasserman said that while the amendment is intended to provide financial relief to homeowners, it could also reduce the revenue local governments depend on to fund essential services and community programs.
According to Wasserman, Coconut Creek began preparing for potential changes in property tax revenue months before the election.
During a strategic planning workshop earlier this year, the City Commission and staff developed a three-phase approach to address possible funding reductions.
The city has already begun evaluating vacant positions before filling them, reducing discretionary spending and postponing certain capital projects. Officials are also pursuing grants and alternative funding sources to minimize the financial impact on residents.
With Amendment 3 approved, Wasserman said the city will continue reviewing its financial outlook and identifying priorities.
Over the next year, the City Commission plans to hold additional workshops to evaluate the budget and determine how to protect services and programs residents rely on.
Wasserman acknowledged that difficult decisions may be necessary but emphasized the importance of transparency and public participation throughout the process.
“While the financial landscape may be changing, our commitment to you will not,” Wasserman wrote on Facebook. “We will continue working to protect essential services, maintain a financially responsible City, and preserve the high quality of life that makes Coconut Creek such a special place to call home.”
The mayor said residents will be kept informed and encouraged to provide input as the city prepares for the financial changes ahead.
