The Coconut Creek Police Department is set to equip officers with body cameras.
During the October 10 meeting, the commission agreed to a resolution to accept $963K from the Byrne Discretionary Grants program. This program supports projects that improve the functioning of the criminal justice system, prevent or combat juvenile delinquency, and assist crime victims.
According to Coconut Creek information, the city proposes implementing the police department’s body-worn cameras and related technologies program as an essential part of officer safety. The purpose is to enhance department accountability, transparency, and efficiency.
The program, which includes equipping each responding officer with a body-worn camera and related technologies and developing and implementing comprehensive body-worn camera policies, is expected to positively impact the community.
According to city information, it is anticipated to reduce complaints, better resolve officer-involved incidents, improve identification, and increase evidence documentation. It will also foster trust between law enforcement and the community.
During the meeting, Police Chief Fred Hofer told the commission that the body-worn cameras are essential to the department and the city’s police officers.
