With the playoffs approaching, Monarch High School faced off against a pair of rivals in North Broward Prep and Coconut Creek High School.
The Monarch boys team played the Eagles on Wednesday and fell 2-1 before losing 3-0 to Coconut Creek High School. However, they did recognize their senior class: Alexis Vera, Gabe Lana, Sebastian Murillo, Brandon Amaral, Santiago Arrioja, Matthew Pereira, and Vitor Bastos.
Monarch closed the regular season with a win against Piper High School 3-0 behind a pair of goals from Gus Game. Gabriel Cardoso also scored, while Tony Dos Santos finished with two assists. The Knights finished the regular season 8-9-3 and will play fourth-seed Coral Springs High School on Thursday, January 23 at p.m.
The Monarch girls’ team recognized their seniors before the new year and won on Thursday against Somerset Prep. Dalilah Alvarado-Nater scored three goals, and Sarah Hernandez, Ariana Arce, Marcela Xavier, and Camila Decarvalho had one. Kearstin Iadarola and Abigail Jacome each had two assists. Alvarado-Nater, Hernandez, and Arie also had assists.
The Knights also had three goaltenders combined to make five saves in the shutout, including Camryn Piskun, Xavier, and Iardola. Monarch tied 1-1 against Piper High School before losing to Olympic Heights Community High School 2-0 to close the regular season. Their first playoff game will be on Wednesday, January 23, against Boyd H. Anderson High School at 7 p.m.
The Eagles lost 4-0 against St. John Paul II Academy and played to a 1-1 draw against American Heritage High School before their senior night against Pompano Beach High School. The Eagles honored Jacob Coffman, Danylo Banbinchuk, Patricio Galvan Bergs, Cameron Riddle, Colton Tunick, Arsenii Kantsurov, and Liam Winkel Pelzer. They also won 8-0 before closing the regular season with a matchup against Somerset with a 4-0 win.
They will be seeded second in the District Tournament and will have a bye before facing Somerset Academy Canyons in the Semifinals. American Heritage High School is the top seed, and FAU High and Glades Central High School will also meet.
The girls played a 0-0 draw against Oxbridge Academy and honored their seniors against Pompano Beach High School with Sumayah Brown, Laila Dionisio, and Lyla Tamara. They also closed the regular season with a game against Somerset Academy, winning 8-0. They will be seeded second in the District Tournament. They will play American Heritage on Monday, January 27, at 5 p.m. for a spot in the final, where they will play either Somerset Academy Canyons, FAU High, or Glades Central High School.
Coconut Creek boys soccer team finished the regular season 12-2-2. Coming off their win against Monarch, the Cougars beat Piper High School 3-1, with Camron Henry scoring a pair of goals. Malcolm Robinson also had one to help them earn the top seed in the postseason. They will have a bye and play the winner of Plantation and Atlantic High School on Thursday, January 24, at 8 p.m., while Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School will face Blanche Ely High School for a spot in the final on Wednesday, January 29, at 6 p.m.
