A Coconut Creek woman allegedly trapped inside her home during a violent domestic assault found a resourceful way to call for help: she placed a DoorDash order and used the delivery instructions to ask the driver to call 911.
The plea came after hours of alleged abuse in which police say the woman was beaten, strangled until she lost consciousness, and stabbed with a broken pair of scissors.
According to Coconut Creek Police Department arrest records, following officers responded to a home near the 400 block of Sunshine Drive on September 6 and arrested Derek J. Frazier, 24, following an investigation into the alleged attack.
Police said the victim told investigators that she and Frazier began arguing at approximately 2:30 a.m. During the argument, Frazier allegedly grabbed the woman by both arms multiple times and threw her to the ground. Police said he then placed his hands around her neck and squeezed until she lost consciousness.
When the woman regained consciousness, she told investigators that Frazier was standing over her, holding her down on the floor and screaming, “I’ll kill you bitch, do you hear me,” according to the probable cause affidavit.
Police documented bruising in many places across the woman’s body, and she complained that her entire body hurt following the attack.
Investigators said the woman attempted to leave throughout the night, but Frazier took her phone and held her against her will. Frazier allegedly threatened to kill her if she tried to leave.
The woman told police that her only apparent escape route was through an upstairs window.
The situation allegedly escalated further when Frazier broke a pair of scissors, placed one of the sharp pieces against the woman’s neck, and cut her.
Still unable to leave, the woman waited until later that morning to seek another way to summon help. At approximately 8:30 a.m., police said she placed a DoorDash order and left a message in the driver’s notes asking the delivery driver to call 911.
Police said the woman eventually left the residence and contacted Coconut Creek police.
Records show Frazier was already on house arrest and probation in connection with a separate false imprisonment case. Police took him into custody and transported him to the Broward County Main Jail.
