
North Broward Prep Hockey Team Wins State Championship. {NBP Athletics}
From championship runs to the start of the spring sports season, schools in Coconut Creek made a run for a State Championship and also began the spring sports season.
The North Broward Prep Hockey team won its fifth straight State Championship, beating Tampa Jesuit. In game one, the Eagles fell behind 3-0 after one period, but came back for an overtime win, then went on to win game two after going 3-0 in pool play.
The girls’ soccer team made it to the State Semifinals before losing 1–0 to Cardinal Gibbons High School, finishing the year 19-2-3. The Chiefs lost 2-0 in the final against Monteverde Academy. The boys’ basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 61–60 loss in the Regional Semifinals to Saint Andrew’s School, the same team that eliminated them in the District Championship. They defeated Oasis High School 70–25 and finished the season with an outstanding 24–4 record.
The girls’ basketball team also reached the Regional round, opening with a 52–49 victory over American Heritage High School before falling to top-seeded Somerset Academy Canyons in the semifinals. The Eagles finished the season 16–8 and were led in scoring by Makena Longo, while Ysamar Pimenthal and Ke’Nya Clark also averaged double figures.
The lacrosse programs have combined for three early-season victories. The boys’ team defeated Olympic Heights High School in its opener, while the girls’ team earned wins over South Plantation High School and Cardinal Gibbons High School. The boys’ tennis team holds a 2–1 record with victories against The Benjamin School and David Posnack Jewish Day School. The girls’ team is still seeking its first team win but has recorded three individual match victories this season.
The baseball team has started strong with a 4–1 record. After dropping its season opener to St. John Paul II Academy, the Eagles responded with four straight wins, including a 16–0 victory over Benjamin High School. The winning streak also includes victories against Park Vista Community High School, Wellington High School, and Miami Killian Senior High School.
The track and field teams competed in their first regular-season meet of the year. The boys’ team placed eighth overall, highlighted by Thor Hwasta’s first-place finish in the javelin. Zach Amelchenko earned second place, while Boston Nguyen recorded a top-three finish in the long jump . The girls’ team finished 11th overall, led by Noelle Barthelette’s second-place finish in the 400 meters and a fourth-place result in the 200 meters.
The Coconut Creek High School boys track and field team tied for 17th place at the Legacy of Legends Season Kickoff Classic. The boys’ relay team of Cayden Delion, Kody Thompson, Zanii Miller, and Braylon Alexis placed fifth in the 4×100-meter relay. The same quartet also finished 10th in the 4×400-meter relay. Individually, Samuel Jean recorded a fourth-place finish in the discus, while Miller added a 10th-place finish in the 400 meters. On the girls’ side, Coconut Creek finished 21st overall. Ja’niya Cohen led the team with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, while Ruthann Powell placed sixth in the 100 meters.
Coconut Creek also reached the final of the flag football inaugural showcase, beating Northwestern High School 14-0 and Cypress Bay High School 14-13. The Cougars lost in the final 13-6 against Western High School and stand at 4-1 this season.
