Broward County residents looking to help victims of the devastating earthquake in Colombia can drop off urgently needed supplies at Tradewinds Park and the North Regional/Broward College Library in Coconut Creek as part of a countywide relief campaign.
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Aug. 10, causing widespread destruction across the region. The disaster has killed about 290 people, injured thousands and destroyed or damaged thousands of homes. Search and recovery efforts have continued amid repeated aftershocks.
Broward County has responded by establishing donation sites at regional parks and libraries to collect supplies for communities affected by the disaster.
For Coconut Creek residents, donations can be brought to the administrative office at Tradewinds Park, 3600 W. Sample Road. The drop-off location is open Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The county is requesting nonperishable food, including canned protein, fruits and vegetables; meals ready to eat; cases of water; sleeping bags; air mattresses; tents; cots; first-aid kits; blankets; backpacks; and tarps.
Disaster-response supplies are also needed, including shovels, KN95 or other respirator masks, duct tape, flashlights, AA, AAA and D batteries, portable radios and solar-powered power banks.
Personal-care donations can include toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, wet wipes, diapers, baby wipes and baby bottles.
Residents can also help families with pets by donating dog and cat food, pet water bowls, leashes, dog and cat treats, and pet crates.
The county is asking donors not to bring clothing or linens.
