To earn the honor of the Eagle Award at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, it takes a very special student. Not only are they successful in several subjects, but they are extremely involved in school activities and continually challenge themselves to do better.
Cyril Yared won this year’s award and said the most important thing for him was who helped him along the way.
“For me, it just reminds me of how much people have contributed to my success in high school,” said Yared. “I would dedicate this award to all the people that have supported me across my high school journey.”
He was most thankful for his teacher Sharon Cutler who was with him when he received his award.
“One thing that makes him unique, is his thirst for learning,” said Cutler. “A lot of the students care more about their grade, [but] Cyril focuses on learning, whether he is in or outside the classroom. He’s that one gem that a teacher gets in a lifetime.”
Yared spent his years at Stoneman Douglas involved in multiple activities, including four years in the DECA Chapter, which prepares students to be future leaders in the area of business management, finance, hospitality, and tourism. Since 2013, Yared has served as senator, vice president of communications, co-president and past-president to over 600 members.
He also helped organize Marjory’s Garden last year, which consists of a 10,000 square foot garden at his school. DECA club members designed and managed the shade house and helped organize public relations efforts to get the message out to the community. Yared’s main focus was helping to get members from the clubs and have them assist with the design, maintenance, and building of the garden.
At the senior night awards, he was also rewarded for being the top-performing student in his AP Physics class. He was also recognized for being a National Merit Commended Scholars and also was rewarded with a cord which he wore at his commencement ceremony for graduating from the NAF Academy of Finance.
Yared was born in France and is fluent in French. He grew up in Colorado and Minnesota before moving to Parkland prior to attending high school. He will be attending college this fall at McGill University in Montreal, Canada where he will be studying software engineering.
He hopes to get involved in the different programs they have, as well as meet new people. Students attend McGill from some 150 countries, and Yared said he looks forward to meeting many of them and creating projects that benefit the global community.
