At Heron Heights Elementary School, the annual Fun Run is a fundraising favorite, prompting the Parent Teacher Organization to mix things up a bit this year and make it more creative.
“After COVID-19, I think people are ready for more fizzle, more fun, so we decided to change the Fun Run this year and make it more of a Crossfit challenge,” said Jeniffer Goldman.
Two of Goldman’s children who attend Heron Heights will participate in the Nov. 17 fundraiser, held at Pine Trails Park.
Goldman said she and other members of the PTO partnered with CrossFit Vice Gym of Coral Springs for the event.
Michelle Brown, who also sits on the PTO board at Heron Heights, is CrossFit Vice’s owner. She posted about the event on the school’s Facebook page, calling it a COVID-safe way to encourage kids to exercise, make healthy choices, and raise money for the school while they’re at it.
With a fundraising goal of $70,000 and generous corporate sponsors, the call to action to not only get fit but get CrossFit is loud and clear. Proceeds will improve school technology, create more enrichment programs, and even put a book vending machine on campus.
The CrossFit-inspired family fitness day has been designed, so students compete based on age and at the appropriate fitness level.
