Finding a job is always a challenge, but for those who have a disability, the path to full employment can be especially difficult.
Stacy DeMartino-Triangolo, Transition Supervisor for Broward County Public Schools, saw the need to help disabled individuals find jobs. She helped create the first Helping Industries Recruit Exceptional Employees (HIREE) job fair at the Junior Achievement South Florida building in Coconut Creek.
She was able to get about 20 local businesses and organizations, including Broward Public Schools, Rising Tide Car Wash, Hilton, and others, to participate. About 300 people interested in finding jobs signed up to participate.
“There are many great people with disabilities who would make great and loyal employees, and they just need an opportunity. It was hard to get businesses to participate, but we were able to get some organizations to come,” said DeMartino-Triangolo.
Annalise Randall of Rising Tide Car Wash in Margate, Parkland, and Coral Springs participated. Having faced the challenges of dyslexia, she understands the difficulties people can face and wants to help individuals find careers. “We had some very good candidates today, and I believe they will help our company,” she said.
Nadine Carnagie, Human Resources Director for Bahia Mar, a Doubletree by Hilton company, said she was impressed by the candidates she saw. “We hire people with disabilities, and many have been successful with our hotels,” she said.
DeMartino-Triangolo hopes to offer another HIREE job fair in the near future, aiming to increase participation from both employers and job seekers and to expand the network of businesses open to hiring people with disabilities.
