Lorenzo Dickens (BSO)
By Ryan Yousefi
A man faces multiple felony charges after striking a police vehicle while eluding a traffic stop that led to a high-speed chase.
A routine patrol turned into a high-stakes pursuit on February 13 when Coconut Creek Police Department officers spotted a vehicle engaging in reckless driving along West Atlantic Blvd.
The vehicle was later found to have been driven by Lorenzo Dickens, 25, of Pompano Beach. Officers observed the vehicle traveling at dangerously high speeds, weaving through traffic, and nearly causing multiple collisions due to its erratic driving.
The situation escalated when law enforcement attempted a traffic stop near Banks Road and West Atlantic Boulevard after identifying the driver as the registered owner, Lorenzo Dickens. However, upon initiating the stop, Dickens sped away, leading to a high-speed chase.
Despite the officers’ efforts to block Dickens at the intersection of Northwest 31st Avenue and Cypress Creek Road, Dickens revved his engine and rammed into a police vehicle, driving it up a sidewalk and nearly into a light pole before continuing his flight.
The chase saw Dickens driving on sidewalks, narrowly missing a telephone pole, and violating multiple traffic laws before CCPD decided against pursuing him further to avoid endangering the public.
Officers later visited Dickens’ registered address in Pompano Beach, where family members convinced him to surrender.
After being read his rights, Dickens was detained and admitted to fleeing because he was scared. He was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
