The Monarch High School Army JROTC Knights Battalion competed in the Raider District Championship meet at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on November 1.
While the Knights Battalion did not qualify for the state competition, the members gained valuable experience by completing physically demanding military tests. The cadets had to complete a 5K (3.1-mile) run in the morning, then compete in various challenges.
Cadets competed in the rope challenge, where they built and crossed a rope bridge. The cross-country challenge tested cadets’ ability to transport a person on a stretcher, and there was an obstacle course. They faced intense competition from West Broward, Western, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High Schools.
Lt. Colonel John Acevedo, senior instructor for the Monarch JROTC, was very proud of the cadets’ performance. “I believe everyone in the Knights Battalion performed well today. Our program builds leadership skills, helps students boost confidence, and encourages strong friendships,” said Acevedo.
One leader is Cadet Captain Peighton Ellis, who was impressed by the battalion’s performance. “Everyone did well today in some very demanding events. By participating in JROTC, I have learned how to be a leader,” she said.
Now the Monarch Battalion is preparing for demanding drill meets and robotics competitions. Acevedo believes the cadets will learn and continue to improve.
