The City of Coconut Creek is holding a free concert on Saturday, June 15, to celebrate Juneteenth.
The program begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Commission Chambers and features speakers, exhibits, and more. More festivities, including a concert, will follow at 6:30 p.m. and will be held outside in the City Hall courtyard area.
Featured music is by the Valerie Tyson Band. The nine-piece group boasts an enviable repertoire of favorites, including today’s Top 40 hits, smooth jazz, soulful R&B classics, essential rock melodies, standards, and evergreens…even reggae and tropical staples.
According to the city, “Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of ending slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, on June 19th, the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.”

Blankets, chairs, and coolers are allowed; pets are not.
