The Coconut Creek High School football team got their season underway with a win in the Kickoff Classic Friday night against Monarch High School.
The game was called at halftime due to the weather, but the Cougars were leading 34-6.
Coconut Creek opened the game with three rushing touchdowns, with Nimari Brantley scoring twice. Monarch’s lone score came from Mark Harris, while Godson Sinelien went on to catch a 55-yard touchdown pass from James Hayes. Jamarie Hostzclaw then finished the half with the team’s fifth touchdown. Florida Atlantic commit Elijah Cannon shined defensively with an interception.
The Cougars will begin the regular season on Friday, August 25, against Boyd H. Anderson High School at 7 p.m. The Cobras went 1-9 last year and fell 35-0 in their only meeting with Coconut Creek.
Monarch was coming off their second straight District Championship in school history and heads into their season-opening game on September 1 against Atlantic High School at 7 p.m. The Eagles went 8-4 last year, beat the Knights 28-12 in their only meeting last year, and will play Palm Beach Gardens before their game against Monarch.
