Kids Eat Free: All Broward County Public School Students to Receive Free Meals in 2023/2024

The Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) announced on Thursday that all public school students within the district will be provided with free breakfast and lunch for the entire 2023-2024 academic year.

The decision comes as part of the Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot, an initiative aimed at ensuring every student receives nutritious meals without any financial burden on families.

The free-to-all breakfast program will launch on August 21 with a tropical-themed celebration in all school cafeterias on the first day of classes, where all students will receive Cool Tropics raspberry passion fruit slushies and ABC cookies free of charge.

The Universal Free Lunch Program will be made available to students at 180 eligible schools, and there is no need for families to fill out an application to participate.

The free lunch is an amendment to the school board’s policy for serving meals to students under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program.

Unlike previous years, the Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot will extend its benefits to all students in non-CEP schools, regardless of their eligibility status, meaning every student will have access to free school meals during the school day.

The district is encouraging parents to complete the online application for Meal Benefits and the Income Survey Form to ensure they can make additional district benefits available when necessary.
