Parkland Library Classes and Events Through February 28 3

During construction of the new wing, the Parkland Library remains open and is holding many upcoming classes for all-ages. The new addition, set to open by the end of the year, will house a dedicated library for children as well as include new space for classes and events.

Upcoming Classes and Activities:

Peaceful Pieces Jigsaw Puzzle Meetup (adults) Tuesday, February 19, 10:30 a.m.

Put it all together with new and old friends during this relaxing morning of jigsaw puzzles. Enjoy snacks, listen to music, and get that sense of completion. Registration is not required. For more information, visit www.cityofparkland.org/library or call 954-757-4207.

Chess Club (age 8 and up) Wednesday, February 20, 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Reading with the Tail Waggin’ Tutor Finn (K-5) Thursday, February 21, 3:30 p.m.

Come to the Parkland Library to practice your reading skills by reading to therapy dog Finn. This program encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend who won’t mind if you make a mistake. Bring a book from home or choose one at the library. Sahaja Meditation (adults & teens) Saturday, February 23, 10:30 a.m.

This simple, time-honored meditation reduces stress and increases wellness. It brings better focus and helps people become more centered and better balanced. Anyone can do it. Afternoon Film & Discussion: Leave No Trace (adults) Saturday, February 23, 2 p.m.

Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland. Arts, Books and Culture Discussion Group, Monday, February 25, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Similar to a current events group, but focused on entertainment and culture, this lively discussion will cover topics like: What’s on the bestseller list? What’s big at the box office? What’s trending in pop culture? Share your thoughts, listen to others, and get your culture fix as we chat. Registration required. Juniorettes’ Reading Buddies (grades K-5) Monday, February 25, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Would your child benefit from a Reading Buddy? The Juniorettes’ Reading Buddies is a cross-age, effective method of energizing young readers. Parkland elementary school age students are welcome to attend. When younger students read with older students, literacy skills are picked up in an enjoyable manner. Building partnerships between our high-achieving, high school girls and elementary-age children is an excellent way to reinforce lifelong reading success. Adult Art Class: Watercolor & Poetry Tuesday, February 26, 10:30 a.m.

Learn tools for infusing creativity into your daily life. Certified Teaching Artist Lori Arbel will guide students through poetry and watercolor exercises. You will create a meaningful work of art. No art experience needed.

Cartooning with Cory (age 7 and up), Tuesday February 26, 4:30 p.m.

Local cartoonist Cory Laub will teach children to draw some of their favorite superheroes and cartoon characters while entertaining them with fun facts about animation and comic book trivia. Building with Lincoln Logs (ages 4-7) Wednesday, February 27, 4 p.m.

Bricks ‘n’ Books (age 6 and up) Thursday, February 28, 3:30 p.m.

Children age 6 and up, bring your imagination and Lego building skills to the library! At each Bricks ‘n’ Books meeting we will have a new building challenge.
