Even in a virtual setting, the show must go on.
And that’s just what it did for the extracurricular music program at Park Trails Elementary School.
With the cancelation of the annual spring concert, students were disappointed they would not be able to perform for their families, and Park Trails music teacher, Amy Stewart, did not want to let her students down.
Stewart herself spent approximately 40 hours compiling a 25-minute Broadway-themed video showcasing violins, recorders, drums, and chorus performances by 80 students resulting in Park Trails Elementary School’s first virtual spring concert.
Principal Arlene Manville said during these challenging times, she has been reminding her staff to try to find the silver linings in the experience.
“By holding weekly practices with the chorus and her various musical groups virtually, Ms. Stewart was able to continue to connect with her students,” said Manville.
Although Stewart lost more than half of her students during the switch to virtual learning, many chose to participate in the concert virtually.
She said the student musicians worked hard practicing on their own, in addition to attending the weekly rehearsals.
“They totally stepped out of their comfort zones to make their videos, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
