Scammers impersonating Coconut Creek’s interim police chief and a sergeant have been calling people to ask for personal information as part of a con, the department said Friday.
The criminals also cloned the phone number of the department’s Real Time Crime Center, 954-973-6700, “to make it look like a legit phone call on Caller ID,” said Coconut Creek Police spokesperson Scotty Leamon.
The interim police chief being impersonated is Frederick Hofer, who was appointed in May.
“We, of course, would never call and ask for personal information or money,” Leamon said. “Just hang up on the scammers.”
The police warning comes a day after they announced that a Coconut Creek woman had recently been conned out of money by scammers impersonating PayPal representatives.
