A Coconut Creek woman was recently conned out of money by scammers impersonating representatives from PayPal, police said.
The victim received an email from someone claiming to work for the payment processing company who was actually a con artist, according to Coconut Creek Police.
The scammer told the woman there were problems with her PayPal account, so she called the phone number provided in the email.
The scammers were on the other end of the line, police said.
They talked the woman into granting them access to her computer, then manipulated her screen to make her believe there were issues with her bank account. They wound up using some of her money to buy Bitcoin.
Coconut Creek Police warned residents to delete any emails they receive claiming to be from PayPal or other parties seeking personal information.
“Remember to be very wary when someone claiming to be a representative from the government, your bank, or another business suddenly reaches out to you via email or on the phone,” the department said in a Facebook post.
“Keep in mind it could come from anywhere,” added department spokesperson Scotty Leamon.
