Teaching children how to respond in case of a fire is just one example of the lifesaving work carried out by the city’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
From search and rescue operations to fire suppression and first aid, the volunteer-based group plays a crucial role in supporting Coconut Creek Fire Rescue during emergencies.
According to Scotty Leamon, spokesperson for Coconut Creek Police, CERT’s numbers have dwindled in recent years. Coconut Creek has been fortunate to avoid major storms over the past decade, which has led to a decline in participation. Now, fire rescue officials are working to revitalize the program and recruit new members to ensure the city remains prepared for any disaster.
“I just would like to see more people come in,” said George Sousou, a longtime CERT member who has volunteered since 2010. Through the program, he has gained valuable skills, including medical treatment and emergency response techniques, all while forming strong bonds with fellow community members.
For residents like Susie Glatt, a registered nurse, the opportunity to serve aligns with her professional expertise. “I felt my professional background was important,” she said, emphasizing how CERT volunteers come from all walks of life but share a common goal—helping their neighbors in times of need.
While volunteering for CERT is an incredibly rewarding experience, it also requires dedication. “It’s a lot of fun, but it’s serious and intense,” said Glatt. The training equips members with the knowledge and skills to save lives, making it one of the most impactful volunteer opportunities available in the city.
