Donated from around the nation, it’s impossible to miss the colorful banners while walking around the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Many signed by students from the schools which sent them.
The banner project began after so many people reached out to the school with letters of love and support. That is when Principal Ty Thompson asked people to send one banner with positive message so everyone could enjoy it and had parent Ricci Nelson coordinate the project.
In this documentary by Alex Weinraub, produced by Parkland Talk, alumni and volunteers along with current students who see the banners on a daily basis share their thoughts on the banner project.
On February 25, an alumni banner ceremony was held at the North Community Park in Coral Springs which included members of the graduating classes of 1992 through 2017. In order of graduation dates, they walked the banners from the park to the Parkland school in a unity parade. When they arrived at the school, school staff took the banners and hung them around the perimeter.
