Carolyn Eggelletion {David Volz}
Carolyn Eggelletion has a genuine heart for people, especially elementary school children.
She is retiring from Broward County Public Schools after a 55-year career, of which 37 years were spent serving as an elementary school principal. She was the principal of Winston Park Elementary School in Coconut Creek for the last 30 years.
The students, teachers, and members of the Coconut Creek Commission honored her years of service with a parade around the school building and a party.
Eggelletion has led a staff of around 100 people, but she exudes a sense of caring about others rather than seeking a position. “Ever since I was a young child, I wanted to help others. I love children, and I love to build relationships,” she said.
Her first position with Broward Public Schools was as a speech pathologist. She worked extensively with children with special needs and spent time at various schools. Over time, her colleagues and mentors encouraged her to pursue a leadership role. “At first, I didn’t want to, but people kept encouraging me and told me I would be good at it,” she said.
She received the necessary education and training to become a school leader. She served as principal first at Driftwood Elementary School in Hollywood, then at Deerfield Park Elementary School, and finally came to Winston Park.
Over the years, Eggelletion got to know the leaders, teachers, and families of Coconut Creek. “I believe in setting high standards and goals. My primary focus is always on caring for the children and helping them learn and grow. I always looked for ways to build positive relationships,” she said.
She is packing up her office and will soon leave the building, but she plans to stay active. “I will look for a hobby, and I want to stay active,” said Eggelletion.
