A woman faces multiple felony charges after authorities say she accessed a friend's home and stole a credit card, which she then used to make unauthorized purchases.
According to the Coconut Creek Police Department, Janetta Joseph, 44, of Parkland, was taken into custody on May 5 at her residence following the issuance of a warrant for her arrest.
The investigation began in November of last year when the victim reported unauthorized transactions on her credit cards. Surveillance footage would soon show that the thief was someone the victim herself was pretty familiar with.
In statements to police, the victim explained that she and Joseph were friends and frequently spent time together. She noted that Joseph was not authorized to use her credit cards or know how she obtained them.
Further questioning in the case revealed that the victim believed Joseph may have obtained her credit cards because she had inadvertently left her garage door open. The interior door to her home was also unlocked.
The victim stated that the credit cards had been stored in her bedroom drawer, where Joseph must have stolen them.
Investigators identified Joseph as the suspect after reviewing security footage from stores where the fraudulent charges occurred. Detectives noted that Joseph was seen wearing a vitamin patch, which she is known to wear because she works for the company. Footage was obtained from Hollister, Target, and Walmart, totaling nearly $1,000 in transactions.
Joseph faces multiple felony charges, including three counts of criminal use of personal identification information of a person over the age of 60, fraudulent use of a credit card, and grand theft in the third degree.
Following her arrest and booking at the Broward County Main Jail, Joseph was released from custody after posting a $50,000 bond.
