City to Enter Mediation to Resolve Issues at Coconut Creek Property

Following a lengthy discussion, the Coconut Creek Commission agreed to enter into mediation with Andrew Cody and Michelle Patton, the owners of Redstone Ranch, rather than filing a lawsuit.

During the February 27 meeting, the commission discussed some complaints against Redstone at 4551 NW 39 Avenue. Beginning in May 2024, the city had cited the owners for construction without a permit and failure to obtain and complete permit processes for fences, stables, electrical, plumbing, and demolition work.

On January 29, 2025, the city posted the Redstone property as unsafe for educational use and work without permits. City staff reported that Redstone had failed to comply and that it was in the best interest of residents’ safety to file a lawsuit.

Commissioner John Brodie said early in the discussion that the property involved was dangerous to the public and that a lawsuit should be filed.

In response, Commissioner Joshua Rydell said that mediation would be a better course for the city and property owners than entering litigation.

A representative for the owners said the laws regarding the property needed to be clarified. The building was being used as a home school, not a traditional one, and the children were no longer educated there.

After more discussion, the commission voted unanimously to pursue mediation.
