Major projects and developments are continuing in Coconut Creek.
During the June 3 Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce Wake Up Breakfast at the Coconut Creek Community Center, City Manager Sheila Rose gave a presentation about major projects underway.
Rose said city staff are working on an economic plan to encourage a more orderly long-term economic development of the city.
The largest planned project is Mainstreet at Coconut Creek, with major residential sections of 300 to 400 housing units, retail stores, and restaurants. Rose is especially excited about the large open area that will offer a place for outdoor public events.
“This will be a great place for outdoor sports events, concerts, and meetings,” said Rose.
Fire Station 113, a new building, will serve the Mainstreet area. It will be located behind Monarch High School. Rose praised the city’s fire department and the Coral Springs-Parkland dispatch service for reducing emergency response times by two minutes.
Coconut Creek is facing two major conflicts. Rose and city leaders are fighting the Florida Turnpike expansion. Most of the road widening is planned for the west side, which will affect the residents there.
One solution to reducing traffic in the city is to increase public transit. Rose encouraged people to consider using buses more and would like to see more public transportation in the city.
Another major problem is the expansion of the Monarch Hill landfill. Rose and the entire city leadership are fighting to prevent the height of the landfill from being increased to 325 feet and the horizontal spread of the dump.
Rose encouraged people to reduce waste by recycling more, mulching, and avoiding single-use plastic items.
