Coconut Creek Police on Friday warned residents about a bank impersonation scam after a man nearly fell victim to the fraud scheme.
The victim, a Coconut Creek resident, recently contacted police after someone posing as a representative from his bank called him on the phone “unexpectedly and told him there was significant fraud going on with his account,” according to a social media post by police.
“This was news to the victim because he hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary.”
Police said the scammer kept the victim talking during their phone conversation, obtaining valuable information like his bank account login and password. The fraudster then used that information to transfer money out of the victim’s account.
Luckily, the bank noticed the fraud before dispersing the funds, police said.
“Remember that no one from your bank would ever call you out of the blue for any reason,” police said. “If you get a similar phone call, just hang up.”
