A Coconut Creek couple, ages 87 and 83, fell victim to scammers posing as Microsoft support representatives, prompting police to warn residents about the scheme.
According to Coconut Creek Police, the couple received a computer pop-up last week that appeared to be from Microsoft and instructed them to enter their phone number.
Scammers claiming to work for Microsoft Security Support then told the couple that hackers had taken over their bank accounts. To protect their money, they were instructed to buy gift cards and provide the card numbers, police said.
The scammers stayed on the phone throughout the process, directing the couple where to purchase the cards and how much money to load onto them.
The couple eventually realized it was a scam, but police said the money was already lost. The department did not disclose the amount.
Coconut Creek Police warned that demands for gift cards are a major red flag and urged residents to hang up on callers making similar claims.
