Police Arrest Man Charged With Attempted Murder in Coconut Creek Shooting

A man accused of firing at his girlfriend during an argument in Coconut Creek was arrested at a Fort Lauderdale Airbnb on an attempted murder charge.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police Department arrest records, Benje Pierre, 22, of Miami was taken into custody on Tuesday, September 22, at a rental home on Northeast 18th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, roughly 12 hours after the shooting that took place in Coconut Creek.

Police say the shooting happened on Monday afternoon outside an apartment building on West Hillsboro Boulevard. Several people called 911 to report two people fighting and four or five gunshots, the affidavit states.

Callers told dispatchers they saw a man flee in a newer-model dark gray BMW SUV.

When officers arrived, they found the woman involved in the argument at her apartment. She was crying, disheveled, and hyperventilating, according to the affidavit.

While searching the apartment for possible victims, officers saw an AR-15-style rifle in the kitchen, an extended Glock magazine and a canister of pepper spray on the counter, and another Glock magazine on the bed in the main bedroom.

The woman was initially uncooperative, police said, but later gave a sworn recorded statement to a detective. She told investigators she and Pierre had dated for about seven years and had moved into the apartment together several months earlier.

According to her account in the affidavit, the two began arguing after she confronted Pierre about suspected infidelity, and the argument spilled into the parking lot. Pierre got into the driver’s seat of the BMW, and she tried to pepper-spray him, but the spray hit only the car door, she told police.

Pierre drove off, circled the parking lot, and came back, the affidavit states. He began pulling luggage out of the SUV and throwing it, then grabbed a gun, got out of the vehicle, and fired at her from about three to five feet away, she told investigators.

She told police she dropped to the ground and stayed there until Pierre left and saw him look in her direction as though checking whether she had been hit. She then went back inside her apartment. The affidavit does not indicate that she was struck.

Officers found three spent shell casings in the grass where the shooting happened, and a crime scene investigator collected them as evidence. Police tried to get surveillance video from the complex, but management told them the cameras were not working, according to the affidavit.

Investigators say Wilton Manors police had pulled over Pierre earlier that morning, about 13 hours before the shooting, and had a black handgun with him, according to the affidavit. They cited him for speeding and warned him.

Detectives tracked Pierre to the Fort Lauderdale rental using cell phone location data, according to the affidavit. Records show Fort Lauderdale police flew a drone over the property before officers moved in, to check for dangers and see whether anyone inside was awake.

Pierre was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
