
Coconut Creek Flag Football. {Coconut Creek Athletics}
Coconut Creek High School is off to an impressive start in its spring sports season, highlighted by strong performances in track and field, flag football, and boys volleyball.
The Cougars recently competed in the NCAA Qualifiers in Coral Springs, where several athletes delivered standout results. Braylon Alexis finished as the runner-up in the shot put, while Zanii Miller placed second in the 400 meters. Miller also added a third-place finish in the 200 meters, while Alexis took third in the 100 meters. Samuel Jean contributed with a third-place finish in the discus.
In relay action, Dudley Norcine, Darryl Pluviose, Breon Burns, and Juvens Joseph placed fourth in the 4×800 relay. Coconut Creek had two additional relay teams finish inside the top five, while Pail Inane earned a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Norcine, Woldy Mathurin, and John Jacques also posted strong performances, each finishing fifth in their respective events.
On the girls’ side, Ruthann Powell led the way with a second-place finish in the 200 meters. She also competed on the 4×100 relay team alongside Marvia Nembhard, Taliyah McCartney, and Kaelin Cooper, and added a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters. In the 4×800 relay, Rose Valery, Tallia Bartley, Farah Charles, and McCartney placed fifth as the team continues preparing for the upcoming BCAA Championship.
Meanwhile, the flag football team has emerged as one of the top programs in the country, currently ranked No. 35 with an 8-2 record. The Cougars are riding a four-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 115-0 during that stretch with victories over Hollywood Hills, Blanche Ely, J.P. Taravella, and Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School.
After dropping two straight games, Coconut Creek opened the season strong with wins over St. Thomas Aquinas, Fort Lauderdale, Northwestern, and Cypress Bay.
Quarterback Mylie Carlson has led the offense with 1,071 passing yards and 21 touchdown passes. Nia Ennis has been her top target, hauling in nine touchdowns for 475 yards, while Laila Standifer has added four receiving scores. Aniyah Phipps has scored three touchdowns, Kameryn Sloan has two, and Zamara Clarke, Indiana Jordan, and Ma’Kylah Menard each have one. Clarke has also contributed three rushing touchdowns, while Standifer has added one on the ground.
Defensively, the Cougars have recorded 14 interceptions this season. Indiana Jordan and Standifer have combined for eight of those, while Precious Crowder and Menard each have two. Sloan and Ennis have also recorded interceptions, and their coach, Shenard Martin, was recently named Coach of the Week by the Junior Dolphins. He received a $1,000 grant for the team.
Coconut Creek will return from spring break to face Boyd H. Anderson High School on Wednesday, March 25, at 5 p.m. The Cobras enter the matchup with a 7-2 record, with losses coming against Seminole Ridge and Nova High School.
In boys’ volleyball, the Cougars have picked up three wins through their first eight matches. Their first victory came in a four-set match against Hallandale High School, while their two other wins came against Piper High School in straight sets.
Their roster includes Darrell Carroll, Jaime Rene, Roubince Faustin, Jeremiah Morales, Junior Rapalo, Garvens Metekkus, Herdy Clermont, Dorian Petilien, and Victor Rodriguez. Coconut Creek will next face Boyd H. Anderson High School on Monday, March 23, at 4:30 p.m. The Cobras are currently 0-4 this season after winning just one match a year ago.
