The third week of the spring sports season was highlighted by a pair of tournaments on the diamond, along with several big matchups in week four.
Monarch High School competed in Tier One of the BCAA Championship. Looking to build momentum entering the week, the Knights opened the event by knocking off South Plantation High School 9-7 despite falling behind 3-0 early.
Monarch scored all of its runs from the fourth inning on, plating two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before adding one in the sixth and four more in the seventh. The Knights capitalized on six errors from the Paladins while getting RBIs from Brody Reavis, Champ Brown, and Van Maxwell. Monarch used five different pitchers in the game, with Cruz Baribeault allowing just an unearned run over two innings.
The Knights followed that performance with a 5-3 victory over McArthur High School in their second game. Monarch started strong and led 4-1 after three innings. Despite allowing two runs in the sixth inning, the Knights added an insurance run and held on for the two-run win.
Jacob Weiner, Brody Reavis, Brown, and Yamil Yaba each recorded RBIs, while Nathan Zalowski earned the win after pitching 5.1 innings. Maxwell closed the game with a four-out save, striking out all four batters he faced. Monarch has since dropped both games this week, falling 2-1 to Pompano Beach High School and 13-1 to Nova High School. They will look to bounce back against Wellington High School on Friday, March 6 at 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, North Broward Prep competed in the HSBN Tournament and opened with a dominant 9-2 win over Etowah High School. Jack Rostock earned the victory and impressed on the mound, touching 95 miles per hour on his fastball for the first time. After allowing two runs in the first inning, he settled in and threw four shutout innings while striking out seven batters. Marcus Hall drove in two runs, while Zach Tavarez, Alex Smith and Caden Coleman each added RBIs.
The Eagles followed with an 8-2 victory over Hartselle High School. Julian Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs, while Tavarez — who recently committed as a junior to play college baseball at Baylor University — was outstanding on the mound. He pitched 4.1 scoreless innings and struck out eight batters.
North Broward Prep later trailed 5-0 against Oak Mountain High School but rallied with two runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Goulet hit a two-run home run, while Alex Smith delivered the go-ahead two-run double. Coleman earned the win in relief, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out four batters.
The Eagles advanced to the championship game but fell 14-6 to South Walton High School. North Broward Prep fell behind early, trailing 9-1, before rallying for five runs in the third inning. However, South Walton added five runs over the final three innings to secure the victory.
Following the tournament, the Eagles bounced back with a 12-0 win over Coral Glades High School. Coleman homered and also pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Rodriguez added another home run as the Eagles scored four runs in the first, third and fourth innings before the game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
North Broward Prep then faced the five-time defending state champions, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and was locked in a tight pitchers’ duel between Rostock and Gio Rojas. MSD scored an earned run off Rostock and won 1-0. Next,
North Broward Prep will face Cypress Bay High School on Saturday, March 7 at 6 p.m.
