The spring sports season began with Monarch High School sending two wrestlers to the state Championship along with exciting matchups between two Coconut Creek Schools.
Competing in one of the state’s toughest regions, Tyler Metellus and Diddier Carillo Castillo placed third to qualify for State. The two wrestlers have combined to win 86 matches this year as the team finished in ninth place overall.
The Monarch High School boys volleyball team picked up its first volleyball victory of the season with a straight-set win over Coconut Creek High School, winning 25-20, 25-11, 25-16. The Knights later dropped matches against West Broward High School and Cooper City High School. Monarch will look to bounce back when it faces Cypress Bay High School on Monday, March 2, at 6 p.m.
Coconut Creek previously opened its season with a four-set victory over Hallandale High School. The Cougars received contributions from Darrell Carroll, Jaime Rene, Roubince Faustin, Jeremiah Morales, Junior Rapalo, Garvens Metekkus, Herdy Clermont, Dorian Petilien, and Victor Rodriguez, with Rapalo recording 20 assists in the win. Coconut Creek later fell to Pompano Beach High School and will next play Piper High School on Tuesday, March 3, at 4:30 p.m.
In flag football, Monarch remains winless through three games, scoring only a safety in losses to Stranahan High School, Somerset Academy Canyons, Coral Springs Charter, and South Plantation High School. The Knights will look for their first win against McArthur High School on Tuesday, March 3, at 4 p.m.
Coconut Creek battled Piper High School in a tightly contested matchup but fell 19-18 in overtime. The Cougars had previously started the season 4-0 but had lost two straight before winning 42-0 over Hollywood Hills High School. They will face Blanche Ely High School on Wednesday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m.
Monarch earned strong performances in track and field, highlighted by Dickinson Rozier winning the discus for the boys team. Christopher Cortinas placed third in the 100 meters, while Isaiah Worthy finished just behind him and also tied for a placement in the 200 meters.
For the girls’ team, Jasmine Jean-Marie won the discus and finished runner-up in the shot put at Blanche Ely High School. Aliyah Duncan and Chelsea Dumas each recorded second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters, while the 4×100 relay team of Kennedi Stephenson, Dumas, Amarni Allen, and Duncan also placed second. Coconut Creek competed in Coral Springs and was led by Paul Inonme, who placed second in the 400 hurdles and third in the 110 hurdles. Luna Escarment and Ja’niya Cohen each earned third-place finishes in hurdle events.
Monarch High School’s softball team dropped both of its games last week, falling to South Plantation and Westminster Academy. They also lost to South Broward High School 12-i in their last game and had their lone victory this season come against Parkridge Christian Academy. Monarch returns to actionTuesday, March 3, against Boca Raton Community High School at 4 p.m.
The water polo team also fell in its lone match this week and is now 0-2 on the season following losses to Northeast High School, Cardinal Gibbons High School, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Despite the record, the Knights have scored 14 goals this season and will next compete against Northeast on March 25. The beach volleyball team won a match against West Boca Raton Community High School but lost two overall matches. They will play Coral Springs High School on Tuesday, March 3, at 4 p.m.
