The City of Coconut Creek will host two free public events later this month honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day, offering residents opportunities for reflection, education, and remembrance at the Coconut Creek Government Center. Advance registration is required for both programs, and space is limited.
The remembrance begins Thursday, Jan. 29, with the Hate Ends Now Cattle Car Exhibition, running from 12:30 to 5 p.m. in the Government Center courtyard, 4800 W. Copans Road.
Presented by Hate Ends Now, the immersive exhibit features an authentic replica of a World War II cattle car. Inside, survivor testimony, narration, and multimedia elements convey the inhumane conditions endured by millions during the Holocaust, encouraging reflection and dialogue on the consequences of hatred, antisemitism, and intolerance.
Viewings are scheduled in 30-minute intervals, and advance registration is required. Time slots must be reserved at CoconutCreek.gov/CattleCar.
The commemoration continues Thursday, Jan. 29, with the Holocaust Memorial Unveiling from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The ceremony will mark the installation of the city’s first public Holocaust memorial, titled Generations, at the Government Center.
Created by renowned artist Marit Meisler, Generations is inspired by the Kindertransport and honors the resilience and enduring spirit of the Jewish people in the aftermath of the Holocaust.
The memorial features silhouettes of children formed from solemn steel, a design that directly references Kindertransport memorials created by the artist’s father, Frank Meisler, creating a powerful multigenerational connection.
Seating for the unveiling is limited to 200 attendees. Advance registration is required by calling 954-956-1580.
Both events are free and open to the public, but capacity is limited, and advance registration is required for each experience.
