Fabio Serna has a passion for restoring cars.
His hard work paid off at the Coconut Creek Car Show on January 24. He received the Best in Show award out of 93 entries for his 1956 Ford F100 pickup truck.
Fabio, of Coral Springs, accepted the award with his six-year-old son, Martin.
“It was a good feeling to win this award. I have put in a lot of hard work over the past 12 years to restore this truck,” he said.
Thirty cars also received awards for their well-restored condition. Eric Fernon, who judged the cars, said he evaluated them based on the number of imperfections and their overall appearance. He said Fabio’s truck was the best-looking vehicle in the show.
Those who came could see a variety of lovingly restored classic cars and trucks, some from the early 20th century and others from more recent times. Owners of the vehicles enjoyed the opportunity to hang out with fellow car lovers. The Collateral Damage Band provided live music, and people could enjoy lunch from food trucks.
Some of the vehicles offered a history lesson. Ed Lapadura, of Margate, showed a military jeep that was part of the Battle of Okinawa. An Army veteran, he said it was a Willys MB jeep, like many used in World War II.
“I have enjoyed restoring this jeep,” he said.

Residents enjoyed participating in the show. Mike DeLayo of Coconut Creek brought his 1970 Chevelle. “I received this car for my 50th birthday, and I have spent years working to restore it. This car is harder to drive than new cars, but I love it,” he said.
Commissioner John Brodie attended the car show and presented trophies to the owners of the top cars. “This was an amazing show, and there was a lot of nostalgia with some of the older cars here. It was a good community event,” he said.
