A Coconut Creek woman recently fell victim to a pornographic blackmail scam, police said.
The woman called Coconut Creek Police after a con artist convinced her that her social media accounts, including Facebook, had been flagged due to pornographic material, the department said.
The scammer asked her to pay to have the images destroyed and unlock her accounts, police said.
She complied, according to the department.
“This is a form of blackmail and a scam. While her social media accounts were hacked, it had nothing to do with pornography,” the department said in a scam alert announcement. “It was a scare tactic and it worked.”
Police said it’s important that residents have strong, secure passwords on their social media accounts.
“Never let anyone frighten you into making some sort of a payment or giving out your bank account information over the phone, via text or email,” police said.
