Drivers passing in front of schools during student arrival and dismissal will need to be extra careful about their speed.
During the November 13 meeting, the commission passed a resolution authorizing the city to execute a revocable license agreement with Broward County to install, operate, and maintain school zone speed detection systems on Coconut Creek Parkway and Wiles Road.
Schools on Coconut Creek Parkway include Coconut Creek High School, Dave Thomas Education Center, and Atlantic Technical College and High School. The Wiles Road zone includes Monarch High School.
Drivers traveling ten miles over the reduced speed limit one hour before and after school hours will receive a $100 citation and no points on their driver’s license. There will be a 60-day education and outreach program for residents. The devices will begin operating in January.
Broward County owns and controls the revocable license area, as well as the portions of Coconut Creek Parkway and Wiles Road where the schools are located. This area is within the city’s jurisdictional boundaries. The city government seeks to install, operate, and maintain a school zone speed detection system under this agreement.
Commissioner John Brodie said he wanted more time to warn residents that the speed detection equipment would be installed. He said the devices should be installed after the holidays, when students have returned to school, and that various forms of communication should be used to notify residents that speed detection cameras are being installed.
Mayor Jackie Railey said the most important benefit is safety for children coming and going to school.
“This is not about making money, it is about safety,” she said.
