A Holocaust memorial will be coming to Coconut Creek.
During the September 11 meeting, the commission approved a resolution for a contract with EES Design Studio to provide fabrication, engineering, and installation services for a Holocaust remembrance art sculpture to be placed at City Hall.
A presentation was given on the process of financing the project and establishing a relationship with the artist. During the fiscal year 2025 budget process, the commission approved incorporating public art at City Hall, beginning with a Holocaust remembrance art sculpture.
The city engaged Miller Legg to prepare a City Hall Campus Conceptual Master Art Plan to identify appropriate locations for public art, including the city’s first piece of art, a Holocaust remembrance sculpture. The commission gave consensus to commission a unique sculpture by artist Marit Meisler.
Because of shifting geopolitics over the past year, fabricating and shipping a completed sculpture from Israel had become cost-prohibitive, and therefore, the staff negotiated with the artist for the purchase of the approved design for $15,000 and sought a qualified local firm to fabricate, engineer, and install the sculpture.
Staff determined that because of the specialized nature of this project and the required timeline, EES Design Studio is the only firm able to provide all services in-house and meet the city’s January 29, 2026, unveiling deadline.
The city obtained a proposal from EES Design Studio, whose staff has reviewed and recommended approval of the agreement with EES Design Studio for the fabrication, engineering, and installation of a Holocaust remembrance art sculpture at City Hall, in an amount not to exceed $85,000 to be funded through the City’s Public Art Fund, according to the presentation.
