Coral Springs and Parkland Residents Needed as Paid Performers in Interactive Art Installation

The cities of Coral Springs and Parkland are seeking performers to participate in The Yellow Walk, an interactive performance installation by award-winning artist Kate Gilmore.

As part of the fourth project in a curated series of temporary public artworks, The Yellow Walk is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge Inspiring Community Healing After Gun Violence: The Power of Art.

Taking place at Coral Springs’ Art Walk at NW 31st Court, the community is invited to assemble for a healing performance.

Kate Gilmore is an artist who works between installation, video, and performance, creating work that seeks to confront how we perceive notions of strength, authority, and control in our social and political arenas. She has been the recipient of awards such as the Anonymous Was Woman Award, the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, Rauschenberg Residency Award, Art Prize Jury Award, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, Art Matters Grant, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Award for Artistic Excellence, Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance, two fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Gilmore’s work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago among others. Gilmore is an Associate Professor of Art and Design at Purchase College, SUNY.

For the interactive performance, Coral Springs and Parkland residents will be selected as paid performers held November 8 – 10, 2019, and will be asked to walk along a designated route for 3-hour shifts.

The Art Walk will be transformed by an 800-foot long yellow carpet on which performers will continuously walk. Audience members are invited to join in The Yellow Walk, and a paid performer will walk alongside them in solidarity.

The Yellow Walk offers many participation opportunities – as a performer, participant, and audience member. The public is invited to silk-screen performance shirts before the event.

The Power of Art is a curated series of five large-scale temporary public art installations. The artworks are created with the community and provide a variety of opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in public programming and healing experiences.
