Holocaust survivors will share their personal stories at an event in Coconut Creek on Monday, Jan. 27.
In a written announcement, the city said the event would be a “powerful evening of reflection and remembrance” featuring a discussion with Holocaust survivors hosted by Commissioner Jeffery Wasserman.
Open to all ages, the event will be held at 6 p.m. in the Coconut Creek City Hall Commission Chambers, 4800 West Copans Rd.
Registration is required to attend. To register, call the city’s recreation complex at 954-956-1580.
Last January, Wasserman organized and moderated “A Special Night with Holocaust Survivors” in the city.
“I have taught the Holocaust to students, but to now be in a position where I can help keep the stories alive in Coconut Creek is humbling,” he wrote on Facebook at the time. “Educate and Never Forget.
As of January 2024, it was estimated that 245,000 Jewish survivors of the Holocaust are still living across more than 90 countries.
The Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million European Jews by the Nazi German regime, its allies, and collaborators between 1933 and 1945, according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
During World War II, Nazi Germany and its allies and collaborators killed nearly two out of every three European Jews using deadly living conditions, brutal mistreatment, mass shootings and gassings, and specially designed killing centers, according to the museum.
Antisemitism, the hatred of or prejudice against Jews, was a basic tenet of Nazi ideology and at the foundation of the Holocaust.
