A man is in custody on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse after calling 911 on himself, confessing that he attempted to stab his sleeping son.
According to arrest records, the incident took place on August 13. It began when the Coconut Creek Police Department responded to receive a 911 call from the suspect himself, later identified as Marcelo Castaneda, 35, of Coconut Creek.
According to emergency call records, Castaneda initially told the 911 operator that he had stabbed his son but would later clarify that his attempt was unsuccessful and that his son was not bleeding.
Records show that several CCPD units arrived at the residence where the call occurred, surrounded it, and attempted to contact the occupants.
Upon the first knock at the door, Castaneda exited the residence on his hands and knees, with his son following closely behind. The son, who was described in the arrest report as hysterically screaming, immediately ran to an officer for safety.
Castaneda was taken into custody without incident and held while a further investigation could occur. CCPD records show a search confirmed that no other individuals were inside.
While officers attempted to decipher what had happened, the child’s mother, who lives in the same building, arrived at the scene and was reunited with her son, who could then tell officers how the incident unfolded.
During an interview, the child recounted that he woke up to find his father holding a large butcher knife to his chest with the tip of the blade physically touching his skin.
The child told CCPD he asked his father, “Why did you do this, dad?” but received no response. Instead, Castaneda began to cry and eventually called the police to report the incident.
The child sustained a small scratch on the left side of his chest, which he claimed was a result of the knife his father held against him.
Following the interview, officers retrieved the knife Castaneda admitted to having used in the incident, which was subsequently turned over to the CCPD evidence department.
CCPD records show Castaneda was transported to the CCPD holding facility, where he later complained of needing to take his blood pressure medication. Coconut Creek Fire Rescue was notified, and Castaneda was transported to Northwest Medical Hospital for medical clearance.
Castaneda was later transferred to the Broward County Main Jail, where he is held on a $70,000 bond.
