A Coconut Creek man has been charged with felony domestic battery by strangulation and hindering an emergency call after allegedly choking his girlfriend unconscious during an argument sparked by his social media messages to other women.
On November 22, the Coconut Creek Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a domestic assault in progress, including one from the victim in which the operator could hear some of the incident taking place.
Upon arrival at the residence, officers encountered the victim, who told officers that her then-boyfriend, later identified as Lavon Moss, 35, of Coconut Creek, became violent after she asked him to leave her home after discovering inappropriate pictures and texts involving other women on his social media.
According to CCPD, the victim stated that Moss became increasingly physically aggressive, poking her face repeatedly with his fingers before allegedly grabbing her neck with his right hand and squeezing forcefully, causing her to lose consciousness.
According to the statement, the victim recounted regaining consciousness to find Moss preventing her from calling 911. He allegedly seized her cell phone and threw it across the room.
The report shows that emergency dispatch had an open line during the incident in which operators could hear a female voice screaming for help and a male voice heard in the background.
The victim claimed to law enforcement that the assault escalated when Moss allegedly slammed her head to the ground, an assault that medical records indicate left a large hematoma above her left eye.
As the victim tried to flee, Moss reportedly blocked her exit, covered her mouth, and placed her in a headlock while threatening, “I will put you to sleep.”
The report shows that the victim eventually managed to escape and frantically sought help by knocking on neighbors’ doors and ringing doorbells, but no one answered.
Eventually, police arrived to find the victim screaming for help outside the residence.
Police arrested Moss and transported him to the Broward County Main Jail.
