Maya and Tuna {Broward County Animal Care}
Two pets with very different personalities but the same goal are hoping to find loving forever homes at Broward County Animal Care.
Maya, a 9-year-old Dutch Shepherd mix, arrived at the shelter as a stray after becoming separated from her family. Although she is microchipped and her owners were contacted, they were unable to reclaim her because they now live out of state and transportation costs were too high.
Shelter staff describes Maya as sweet, friendly, and playful. The 55-pound dog enjoys playing fetch with Frisbees and rope toys, cooling off in the pool and earning treats by showing off her commands, including sitting and lying down. She also loves belly rubs and has done well socializing with other dogs during shelter playgroups.
Animal Care staff say Maya’s intelligence, affectionate personality and friendly nature would make her a great addition to many families.
Maya will be spayed, microchipped and vaccinated against rabies before adoption. Her adoption fee is waived, and adopters only pay the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.
Cat lovers may also want to meet Tuna, a 1-year, 8-month-old spayed domestic longhair.
Tuna arrived at the shelter in May after being surrendered by her owner, who had too many pets to care for. Staff says she has a gentle personality, a sweet meow, and enjoys being petted, scratching on her post, and rolling around in catnip. The petite cat also has a soft, fluffy coat.
While Tuna is affectionate with people, shelter staff say she prefers not to share her space with other cats and would do best as the only feline in the home.
Tuna is already spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Like Maya, her adoption fee has been waived, with adopters responsible only for the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.
Broward County Animal Care is located at 2400 S.W. 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale and is open daily for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
