With the new Open Division featuring the top eight teams in Florida, Monarch High School faced two of those programs in consecutive games, including the six-time defending state champions and the top-ranked team in the country.
The Knights scored three touchdowns against St. Thomas Aquinas High School but fell 71-20. Chris Cortinas, who recently switched his college commitment from Charlotte to Wofford University, caught two touchdown passes from Jeremiah Milcent, who also threw one to Rosley Caze Jr.
Monarch then faced West Boca Raton Community High School, which has won two consecutive state championships, and suffered a 44-0 loss on Thursday night. Darren Juedy recorded an interception, but the Knights were shut out for the first time since 2019.
Monarch dropped to 4-5 this season and will close out the regular season against Charles W. Flanagan High School on Thursday, October 29, at 7 p.m. The Falcons are 1-8 this year, with their lone victory coming against Boyd H. Anderson High School.
