The Monarch High School football team began its season in the Kickoff Classic at Spanish River Community High School and picked up a 35-22 win.
The Knights though got off to a difficult start, turning the ball over on each of its first four possessions and falling behind 22-7, but responded in a big way, scoring the final 28 points of the game to rally for a 30-15 victory. Keshawn Paschall scored Monarch’s first touchdown and added another in the second half. Chris Cortinas recorded two receiving touchdowns, while Bryan Bynes added another score to help complete the comeback. Khaleb Mack and Ethan Bearbruan each had interceptions on defense.
Monarch is coming off its fourth straight District Championship after finishing 7-5 last season, including a playoff victory over Doral Academy. The Knights will face an immediate test when they open the regular season against Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. The Lions went 11-3 last season and defeated Monarch 28-7 in their matchup. Chaminade-Madonna enters the new season ranked fifth in the state.
